Applicability Objective Wooden outside terrace This Knowledge Standard provides guidance onwood essence choice for outside terrace planking between the 4following species: . Resinous . Leafy . Exotic . Composite Description &Analysis Background Criteria tobetaken into account are: . Price (€/m2) . Class (1to5): resistance tofungus and insects -1.Nocontact with humidity (inside). Humidity 20% -3.Outside, no contact with ground. Humidity usually >20% -4.Outside, permanent contact with ground. Humidity >20% -5.Contact with see water . Stability: distortion (inflation, shrinkage) according to climatic conditions -LS:low stability -MS:medium stability -S:stable -HS:high stability . Hardness: resistance todamage, from H1 (low) toH5(very high) . Skid resistance: R9 (low) toR13 (very high) . Thermal conductivity inducing potential heat discomfort . Ecological footprint: 2certification labels exist -PEFC (Programme dereconnaissance decertifications forestières -FSC (Forest Steward-ship Concil) . Aesthetic Price Planking represents asignificant part of aterrace price (75%) and planking price ranges from 1to10according to wood essence. . Each specie has awide range of price depending on the wooden essence . Resinous is usually the less expensive specie . gestion de la Qualité Author: Nicolas LAMBERT Last Saved: August 21 st 2013 Approved by: Marc BENECH Date Approved: August 26 th 2013 Class, Stability, Hardness The lifetime of aterrace islinked to3criteria :Class, Stability, Hardness For 2wooden essence per specie, the radar scheme presents those criteria, the price interest and the risk linked totreatment quality (*). (*) Class isoften expressed after treatment (autoclave, very high temperature, oleo-thermic). Most ofwooden essence offer class4 performance but each wooden essence has anatural class before treatment. When it is low, there isarisk linked totreatment quality and an strong ecological footprint linked totreatment. Description &Analysis (cont’d) Evaluation tool The importance ofeach criterion has tobeevaluated according to the terrace usage and environment (humidity, sun/shadow exposition, damage exposure…) The enclosed excel tool thus enables, for 18 wooden essences, to evaluate the best compromise according to the weighting of each criterion. An example of result is given in the enclosed table. It shows that, according to the chosen weighting, Ipé and Composite Coextruded are the best choices. The evolution of criteria’s weighting can strongly modify the final result. Hardness Evaluation tool.xlsx Resinous Leafy Exotic Skid resistance is not considered as arelevant criteria as: . Wood essence offermore or less the same level of skid resistance . Skid resistance ismainly linked to the moss and thus to cleaning . Some floorboards are striated soastooffer abetter skid resistance but this is mainly to hidden wood poor quality and will finally result ina degraded skid resistance asitwill be more subject to moss accumulation Thermal conductivity is globally low for all wooden essences, except for composite, and especially alveolar composite, that could involve discomfort due to excessive heat. This has to be taken into account, especially in case permanent exposition to sun inwarm regions. Ecological footprint and aesthetic are additional subjective criteria that could also influence the decision. Composite and exotic woods have ahigher ecological footprint as they are less natural for the 1 st one, and require transport pollution for the 2 nd . It has also tobementioned that some traditional wooden essences (resinous or leafy) that do not naturally have ahigh class require astrong treatment to reach anacceptable class, thus having astrong ecological impact. The column risk of the upper table can be used to evaluate it. Additional information It has tobenoted that wooden essence choice may have slight impacts onconstruction as, for example - wooden floorboard flexibility will drive the backing strip spacing - high hardness floorboard will not ease the cutting and drilling But these factors should not influence the choice as they stay secondary and not sizing parameters. Stability Significance 1 Since afew years, wood is the most popular material for aterrace 2 Planking represents asignificant part of aterrace price (75%) and is one of the most impacting design decision for terrace lifetime More than 40 wooden essence are available and it is really difficult tofind reliable advices that will enable tofind the best compromise according 3 to the situation Not yet covered Maintenance price: the price criterion that is presented here has to be put in perspective with the associated maintenance cost. The most 1 expensive wood essence atpurchase would perhaps not be the most expensive during the terrace lifetime. This will also depend on the wish to keep the original color, which requires aregular care with specific products.
